Bill Evans Trio – Portrait In Jazz VG+/VG+

$92.00 Inc. GST

Bill Evans’ “Portrait in Jazz” is a landmark album in the pianist’s career, marking the birth of his now-legendary trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Released in 1960, it was the first of just two studio albums this group would record together before LaFaro’s tragic death. Though only a short-lived collaboration, their musical chemistry was undeniable.

“Portrait in Jazz” stands out for its fresh and exciting sound. It captures a moment of innovation, coming just eight months after Evans’ groundbreaking work with Miles Davis on “Kind of Blue.” Evans’ masterful piano playing takes center stage, but this is a true trio effort. LaFaro’s bass is no longer relegated to simply keeping time; his lines weave and dance with Evans’ melodies, creating a more democratic and interactive sound. Motian’s drumming provides a nuanced and sensitive foundation, pushing the music forward without overpowering the other musicians.

The album is not all breakneck speed and innovation. While it features some more up-tempo and swinging numbers, it also leaves room for beautiful ballads that showcase Evans’ introspective and lyrical side. “Portrait in Jazz” is a well-rounded portrait of a developing musical relationship, a glimpse into a future filled with immense potential that was sadly cut short.
