“Focus 3” is a double album by the Dutch progressive rock band Focus, released in November 1972. Building on the success of their previous work, “Moving Waves,” which featured the hit “Hocus Pocus,” the band further developed their distinctive blend of instrumental prowess and avant-garde composition in “Focus 3.”
The album showcases the group’s exceptional musicianship, led by Thijs van Leer’s virtuosic flute and keyboard work, and Jan Akkerman’s innovative guitar playing. The musical style ranges from classical influences to jazz fusion, progressive rock, and yodeling, creating a unique and eclectic sound.
The album’s tracks vary in length and style, featuring both concise songs and extended instrumental explorations. One of the highlights is “Sylvia,” a melodic and accessible track that became a commercial success and a radio favorite. In contrast, the epic “Anonymus II” spans an entire side of the album, showcasing the band’s ability to weave complex, extended instrumental passages.
“Focus 3” received critical acclaim for its technical proficiency, imaginative compositions, and the seamless blending of various musical genres. The album solidified Focus’s reputation as one of the leading progressive rock bands of the early 1970s.
