Running on Empty is a unique album by American singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, released in 1977. Unlike most live albums, it features songs that were never recorded in the studio before, and captures the life on the road of a touring musician. The album was recorded in various locations, such as on stage, backstage, in hotel rooms, and on tour buses. The album includes some of Browne’s most popular songs, such as the title track “Running on Empty”, which reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the medley “The Load-Out/Stay”, which peaked at No. 20. The album also features covers of songs by other artists, such as Danny O’Keefe’s “The Road” and Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs’ “Stay”. The album received critical acclaim and commercial success, earning two Grammy nominations and selling over seven million copies in the US.

The album received two Grammy Award nominations in 1979: one for Album of the Year and the other for Pop Male Vocal Performance for the song “Running on Empty”.
