John Coltrane – Newport ’61 isn’t your typical Coltrane album. Released in 2013, it captures a brief but intense live performance from the 1961 Newport Jazz Festival. Clocking in at under 30 minutes, the recording offers a glimpse into Coltrane’s explorations during a transitional period in his career.
The most striking aspect is the use of two bass players, Art Davis and Reggie Workman. While the sound might feel unconventional at first, it creates a thick, pulsating foundation for Coltrane’s soaring saxophone work. This is particularly evident on the album’s highlight, “My Favorite Things,” where Coltrane takes the classic melody on a journey through unexpected twists and turns.
Another noteworthy element is the inclusion of a relatively subdued version of “Naima,” believed to be the only surviving recording of the composition featuring McCoy Tyner on piano before the melody was reworked. The album also features a high-energy rendition of “Impressions,” showcasing the interplay between Coltrane and his classic quartet – Tyner, Elvin Jones on drums, and the two bassists.
Despite its brevity, Newport ’61 offers a valuable document of Coltrane’s artistic evolution. It’s a chance to hear a master improviser pushing boundaries and experimenting with new sonic textures, all within the context of a prestigious jazz festival setting.
