Pink Floyd’s “Animals” ditched the whimsical space explorations of their previous records for a scathing look at British society in the mid-70s. Released in 1977, the album is a concept piece where Roger Waters’ lyrics cast different classes as animals: the powerful and exploitative as domineering pigs, the followers as mindless sheep, and those just trying to get by as wary dogs. Musically, it retains the band’s signature long, atmospheric compositions, but with a sharper edge that reflects the album’s cynical outlook.
