Abraxas is the second studio album by the American Latin rock band Santana, released on September 23, 1970 by Columbia Records. The album features a diverse range of musical styles, including hard rock, blues, jazz, and psychedelic rock, as well as influences from Latin American and African music. The album contains some of the band’s most popular songs, such as “Black Magic Woman”, a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s song with an added section from Gábor Szabó’s “Gypsy Queen”, “Oye Como Va”, a cover of Tito Puente’s mambo classic, and “Samba Pa Ti”, a melodic instrumental guitar piece. The album also showcases the virtuosity and creativity of the band members, especially guitarist and leader Carlos Santana, who delivers expressive and fiery solos throughout. The album’s cover art, designed by the famous art collective Hipgnosis, features a painting by Mati Klarwein called Annunciation, which depicts a woman giving birth to an egg that contains the world. The title of the album comes from a line in Hermann Hesse’s novel Demian, which reflects the band’s interest in spirituality and mysticism. Abraxas was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart and achieving triple platinum certification in the US.
