“The World of Tsugaru-Shamisen” is a 1977 vinyl release that brings together two masterful shamisen players—Chikuzan Takahashi and Chikumi Ito—for a vivid exploration of the Tsugaru tradition, a regional style of shamisen music from northern Japan. Issued in Sweden by Bonnier Amigo, the album is a reissue of earlier Japanese recordings, preserving the raw, improvisational energy and folkloric depth of this unique musical form.
Takahashi Chikuzan, blind from early childhood and trained as an itinerant musician, became a legendary figure in Tsugaru-jamisen performance. His style is marked by emotive solo improvisations, often titled “Iwaki” after the mountain that looms over his native Aomori Prefecture. Chikumi Ito, a fellow virtuoso, complements Chikuzan’s expressive phrasing with her own dynamic interpretations, creating a dialogue that feels both ancient and immediate.
The album’s tracklist reads like a tour through the sonic landscape of northern Japan: from the fiery “Tsugaru Jyongarabushi” in both original and arranged forms, to festival pieces like “Aomori Nebuta Matsuri Bayashi” and “Soma Bonuta.” Each piece pulses with regional identity, echoing the rhythms of rice fields, folk dances, and seasonal rituals. The shamisen here is not merely an instrument—it’s a storyteller, a conduit for memory and place.
