Communards – Communards VG+/VG

Communards is the debut album by the British synth‑pop duo The Communards, a collaboration between Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles. It blends bright, electronic synth‑pop with high‑energy hi‑NRG dance music, anchored by Somerville’s soaring falsetto and Coles’ classically informed keyboard arrangements. Released on 14 July 1986, it became a major UK success, peaking at No. 7 and spending 45 weeks on the Albums Chart.

The album’s breakout moment was the duo’s explosive cover of “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, which hit No. 1 for four weeks and became the best‑selling UK single of 1986. Its mix of club‑ready dance tracks (Disenchanted, So Cold the Night) and more reflective piano‑led pieces (You Are My World, Lover Man) shows the duo’s range, from political undercurrents to emotional vulnerability.
