Glass Beach – Plastic Death (Orange Vinyl)

Glass Beach’s sophomore album, Plastic Death, is a wild ride through a sonic junkyard, gleefully picking apart genres and then welding them back together into something entirely new. Imagine the Pacific Garbage Patch transformed into a musical landscape: a chaotic yet strangely beautiful sprawl where glitchy electronics bump up against thrashing guitars, playful pop hooks intertwine with dark post-punk grooves, and the occasional blast of jazz fusion adds a touch of unexpected class.

Don’t be fooled by the album’s seemingly disparate parts, though. Plastic Death is a meticulously crafted experience, a whirlwind that feels carefully choreographed despite its surface chaos. Songs build gradually, luring you in with catchy melodies and alluring textures, before ripping open into exhilarating bursts of experimentation. There’s a sense of playful defiance here, a band gleefully defying expectations and reveling in the unexpected beauty of musical detritus.

The album’s dark undercurrents shouldn’t be ignored either. Lyrically, Plastic Death explores themes of identity, the digital self, and the ever-present feeling of being adrift in a sea of information. The music itself reflects this, with moments of neon-bright optimism flickering against a backdrop of swirling anxieties. But even in its darkest corners, Plastic Death retains a glimmer of hope, a testament to the band’s ability to find moments of catharsis amidst the chaos.
