Glenn Branca – The Ascension

The Ascension is Glenn Branca at his most elemental and overwhelming, a work that treats electric guitars as a single massed organism rather than individual voices. The album’s four long pieces build from tightly wound minimal motifs into towering harmonic structures, using volume, repetition, and alternate tunings to create a sense of ecstatic pressure. What begins as rigidity gradually becomes transcendence: overtones bloom, rhythms blur, and the ensemble’s attack turns into a kind of secular liturgy. There’s a physicality to the sound, but also a strange serenity inside the roar, as if Branca is carving order out of pure noise. The record captures the moment when New York’s no‑wave abrasion collided with modernist ambition, resulting in music that feels both confrontational and visionary. It remains a landmark of avant‑rock, a statement of intent from a composer determined to reshape what a guitar orchestra could express.
