American VI: Ain’t No Grave is the sixth and final album in the American series by legendary country singer Johnny Cash. The album was released posthumously on February 23, 2010, three days before what would have been Cash’s 78th birthday. The album consists of ten songs that Cash recorded with producer Rick Rubin in the last months of his life, while he was suffering from various health issues. The album features a mix of covers and original songs, some of which were written by Cash himself. The album reflects Cash’s faith, mortality, and legacy, as he sings about his impending death and his hope for resurrection. The album’s title track is an old gospel song that Cash reinterprets as a defiant statement of his belief in life after death. Other songs on the album include “Redemption Day”, a song written by Sheryl Crow that Cash had previously recorded with her; “For the Good Times”, a Kris Kristofferson classic that Cash sings with a tender and nostalgic tone; “Aloha Oe”, a traditional Hawaiian farewell song that Cash learned from his wife June Carter Cash; and “I Corinthians 15:55”, a short and simple song based on a biblical verse that expresses Cash’s faith in God’s victory over death. The album received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised Cash’s voice, emotion, and courage. The album also won the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album in 2011. American VI: Ain’t No Grave is an album that showcases Cash’s strength, wisdom, and grace in the face of his own mortality.
