Released in 1986 on Ariwa Sounds, Natural Suntan is the debut album from UK reggae artist Macka-B, produced by Mad Professor at Ariwa Studios in London. The record introduced Macka-B’s signature blend of roots reggae, dubwise production, and socially conscious lyricism, delivered with wit, clarity, and a distinctly British patois.
The title track “Natural Suntan” is a sharp critique of Eurocentric beauty standards, celebrating Black identity with humour and pride. Other standout cuts include “Too Much Chicken,” “Big Mack,” and “Don’t Drink Alcohol,” each combining danceable rhythms with pointed commentary on health, culture, and systemic injustice. Macka-B’s delivery is rhythmic and conversational, often bordering on spoken word, while Mad Professor’s production layers echo, reverb, and deep bass in classic Ariwa fashion.
