McKinley Dixon – Magic, Alive! (Neon-Orange Vinyl)

Magic, Alive!, released on June 6, 2025, is McKinley Dixon’s fifth studio album and a radiant, genre-defying exploration of grief, friendship, and the elusive nature of magic. Building on the narrative threads of his previous work, the album tells the story of three kids grappling with the loss of a close friend, and their yearning to reconnect—whether through memory, imagination, or something more mystical.

Dixon, a son of the ghost-haunted South, crafts a sonic landscape that is as rich and layered as his storytelling. The album fuses jazz rap, soul, and experimental hip hop, with lush instrumentation and a rotating cast of collaborators including Quelle Chris, Anjimile, Blu, and Pink Siifu. Tracks like “Sugar Water,” “We’re Outside, Rejoice!,” and “Could’ve Been Different” pulse with emotional urgency and poetic depth, while the title track “Magic, Alive!” distills the album’s central question: what if magic is simply the belief in something unseen, or the act of holding onto love beyond loss?
