Richard Beirach – Elm (Japanese Pressing) VG+/VG+

Richard Beirach’s Elm is a landmark solo piano recording that perfectly captures the introspective, lyrical side of the ECM aesthetic. Recorded with remarkable clarity and intimacy, the album places Beirach alone at the keyboard, exploring a collection of original compositions with a balance of technical sophistication and emotional openness. His playing moves effortlessly between delicate melodic passages and rich, impressionistic harmonies, revealing influences from both jazz and European classical music while maintaining a highly personal voice. The spacious recording allows every nuance to resonate, giving the music a contemplative quality that rewards close listening. Rather than relying on virtuosity alone, Beirach focuses on mood, texture, and storytelling, allowing each piece to unfold naturally and without haste. The result is a deeply reflective and atmospheric album that conveys a sense of quiet beauty throughout. Elegant, thoughtful, and emotionally resonant, Elm remains one of the finest solo piano recordings in modern jazz.
