Avalon is the eighth and final studio album by the English rock band Roxy Music, released on 28 May 1982 by E.G. Records and Polydor. The album was recorded between 1981 and 1982 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and features a smooth, sophisticated sound that reflects the band’s maturity and refinement. The album includes some of the band’s most popular songs, such as “More Than This”, “Avalon”, and “Take a Chance with Me”, which showcase Bryan Ferry’s distinctive vocals, Andy Mackay’s saxophone, and Phil Manzanera’s guitar. The album also features contributions from guest musicians such as Haitian singer Yanick Étienne, who provided the haunting backing vocals on the title track. The album cover was designed by Roger Dean, who depicted a mythical island inspired by the Arthurian legend. Avalon received critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 53 on the US Billboard 200. It has sold over 12 million copies worldwide and has been certified double platinum in the US and platinum in the UK.
