Stereolab – Sound-Dust

$74.95 Inc. GST

Released on August 28, 2001, Sound-Dust is the seventh studio album by Anglo-French avant-pop band Stereolab, and a radiant culmination of their genre-blurring explorations. Produced by post-rock luminaries John McEntire and Jim O’Rourke, the album was recorded at Soma Studio in Chicago and features a lush, orchestral palette that expands the band’s sonic vocabulary beyond their earlier krautrock and lounge-infused experiments.

The record pulses with intricate arrangements and whimsical textures—flutes, vibraphones, marimbas, and vintage keyboards swirl around Laetitia Sadier and Mary Hansen’s airy vocals, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that’s both cerebral and playful. Tracks like “Captain Easychord” and “Baby Lulu” shift between breezy melodies and unexpected rhythmic detours, while “Nothing to Do with Me” incorporates satirical lyrics derived from Chris Morris’s surreal TV series Jam, adding a layer of absurdist wit.

Sound-Dust was the final Stereolab album to feature Mary Hansen before her untimely death in 2002, lending the record a bittersweet resonance. Its subtle complexity and radiant optimism make it a standout in the band’s discography—a technicolor collage of sound that invites repeated listening and reveals new details with each spin.
