The Necks – Chemist (CD)

The Necks shake up their formula on “Chemist,” a departure from their usual hour-long epics. Instead, three 20-minute tracks explore new sonic territory. The album retains the trio’s signature meditative quality, but with fresh ingredients. Tracks like “Buoyant” introduce electric guitar alongside piano and drums, creating a smoky jazz atmosphere. “Abillera” ventures further, with solo sections and a touch of Steve Reich-inspired minimalism. Even the heavier “Fatal” feels uniquely Necks, a slow-burn groove with a hint of David Lynchian darkness. Though some may miss the extended journeys of their past work, “Chemist” proves the band’s ability to evolve while retaining their core chemistry. Winner ARIA Best Jazz Album Award 2006.
