The Velvet Underground – White Light / White Heat

White Light/White Heat is the second studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground, released on January 30, 1968 by Verve Records. The album is a departure from the band’s debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, which featured a more melodic and experimental sound. White Light/White Heat is a raw and abrasive album that explores themes such as drug use, violence, and sexual deviance. The album was the last one to feature multi-instrumentalist and founding member John Cale, who left the band shortly after its release. The album also features “The Gift”, a spoken word story by Cale over a stereo-panned instrumental track; “Lady Godiva’s Operation”, a surreal song about a botched sex change operation; “Here She Comes Now”, a short and melodic song that contrasts with the rest of the album; and “I Heard Her Call My Name”, a noisy and frenzied song that showcases Lou Reed’s guitar feedback. White Light/White Heat was not a commercial success, and peaked at number 199 on the Billboard Top LPs chart. The album’s only single, “White Light/White Heat”, failed to chart as well.

The album received mixed reviews from critics at the time, who found it too harsh and inaccessible.
