Wilco – A Ghost is Born

Wilco’s A Ghost Is Born, released in June 2004 on Nonesuch Records, is the band’s fifth studio album and one of their most daring works. Following the breakthrough of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, this record pushes further into abstraction, balancing fragile songwriting with extended experimental passages. Produced with Jim O’Rourke, it places Jeff Tweedy’s guitar at the forefront, often jagged and restless, and pairs it with moments of delicate introspection.

The album opens with “At Least That’s What You Said,” a quiet piano ballad that erupts into fractured guitar noise, setting the tone for a collection that constantly shifts between intimacy and dissonance. “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” stretches into a krautrock-inspired jam, hypnotic and relentless, while “Hummingbird” offers a whimsical, Beatles-like lift. “Handshake Drugs” spirals with tension, and “The Late Greats” closes the record with wry humor, celebrating imaginary bands supposedly greater than any real ones. Perhaps most challenging is “Less Than You Think,” which dissolves into a fifteen-minute drone, testing the listener’s patience and underscoring the album’s uncompromising spirit.

A Ghost Is Born arrived during a turbulent period for Tweedy, who entered rehab shortly before its release, and the record reflects themes of fragility, struggle, and renewal. It was met with critical acclaim, winning two Grammy Awards in 2005, including Best Alternative Music Album.
