Going for the One is the eighth studio album by the English progressive rock band Yes, released on 15 July 1977 by Atlantic Records. The album marks a departure from their previous albums, featuring shorter and more direct songs without an overarching concept. It also saw the return of keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who had left the band in 1974 after disagreements over Tales from Topographic Oceans. The album was recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, where the band had relocated to avoid high taxes in the UK.
The album contains five tracks, ranging from the upbeat and energetic title track to the epic and majestic “Awaken”, which is considered by many fans and critics as one of the band’s finest compositions. The album also showcases the band’s diverse musical influences, from classical to country to funk. The album received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the band’s return to more accessible and melodic music. It was also a commercial success, reaching No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 8 on the US Billboard 200. It was certified gold by the RIAA for selling 500,000 copies in the US.
