Zakir Hussain, Chaurasia, McLaughlin, Garbarek – Making Music

Making Music is a remarkable meeting of musical traditions, bringing together Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia, John McLaughlin, and Jan Garbarek in a collaboration that feels both spontaneous and deeply unified. Rather than presenting a simple fusion of Indian and Western styles, the album creates a genuine dialogue between cultures, where every musician contributes an equally distinctive voice. Chaurasia’s expressive flute melodies, McLaughlin’s fluid guitar work, Garbarek’s haunting saxophone lines, and Hussain’s masterful tabla playing intertwine with extraordinary sensitivity and restraint. The music unfolds with a natural sense of flow, allowing intricate rhythms and lyrical improvisations to develop organically without ever feeling forced or overly technical. There is a spiritual and contemplative quality running throughout the album, balanced by moments of energy, warmth, and joyful interaction. Elegant, atmospheric, and richly textured, Making Music is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of cross-cultural jazz, demonstrating how diverse musical traditions can come together to create something genuinely timeless.
