Billy Cobham – Total Eclipse VG+/VG+

Total Eclipse is the third solo album by the American jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham, released in 1974 by Columbia Records. It features eight original compositions by Cobham, performed by a stellar lineup of musicians, including John Abercrombie on guitar, Michael Brecker on saxophone, Randy Brecker on trumpet, and Glenn Ferris on trombone.

The album showcases Cobham’s virtuosity and versatility as a drummer, composer, and bandleader. The album ranges from the epic mini-suite “Solarization”, which displays the band’s technical abilities and Cobham’s strong compositional skills, to the funky “Moon Germs”, which became a Cobham classic and features a guest appearance by guitarist Cornell Dupree. The album also includes a beautiful flugelhorn solo by Randy Brecker on “The Moon Ain’t Made of Green Cheese”, backed by Cobham’s debut on piano.

Total Eclipse was a commercial and critical success, reaching number 6 on the Billboard Jazz album chart, number 12 on the R&B album chart, and number 36 on the Billboard pop albums chart.
