Clifford Brown and Max Roach – At Basin Street VG+/VG+

$50.00 Inc. GST

“Clifford Brown and Max Roach at Basin Street,” released in 1956, stands as a landmark recording in the world of hard bop jazz. Though the album title evokes the vibrant atmosphere of a New York City nightclub, the music was actually crafted in a studio setting.

This session marked the final official album by the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, a powerhouse group that had enthralled audiences with their electrifying performances. Tragically, it was also one of the last recordings for trumpeter Clifford Brown and pianist Richie Powell before their untimely deaths later that year.

Despite the somber context, the album pulsates with energy and innovation. Brown’s trumpet soars with a clear, piercing tone, his lines full of lightning-fast runs and lyrical improvisation. Drummer Max Roach lays down a foundation of swing and drive, his dynamic and inventive playing pushing the band forward.

The entire quintet, including Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, Richie Powell on piano, and George Bledsoe on bass, operates in perfect sync. Their collective energy is palpable, creating a tapestry of intricate melodies, infectious rhythms, and deeply emotive solos.
