Etta James – At Last! (Wax Time – Clear Vinyl)

At Last! showcases Etta James stepping into a fully realised vocal identity, blending blues, jazz, and early soul with a confidence that feels both commanding and deeply vulnerable. Her voice moves effortlessly between smoky intimacy and soaring power, giving each song a sense of emotional immediacy that transcends its era. The arrangements are lush but never overwhelming—strings, horns, and rhythm section working in elegant balance to frame her phrasing and amplify the drama she brings to every line. Across the album, James shifts from aching ballads to more spirited, swinging numbers, revealing a range that feels natural rather than showy. What defines the record is its sense of arrival: a young singer claiming space with authority, shaping familiar styles into something unmistakably her own. It remains a landmark of early‑60s soul, rich in feeling, craft, and timeless vocal presence.
