Foghat’s Boogie Motel (1979) marked a shift in direction for the band. Recorded at the aptly named Boogie Motel Studios, the album aimed for a more commercially friendly sound compared to their earlier blues-rock stomp. While it achieved some success, with the power ballad “Third Time Lucky” becoming a hit, the album strayed from their signature style.
Some tracks, like “Comin’ Down With Love,” fell flat with a bland pop-rock approach. However, the title track, “Boogie Motel,” brought back some of that classic Foghat boogie with a lengthy instrumental jam. Boogie Motel is a mixed bag, a decent listen but lacking the grit and guitar fire that made Foghat stand out.
