Foreigner – 4 VG+/VG+

Released in 1981, Foreigner’s fourth studio album, simply titled “4,” marked a turning point for the band. It signified not just their musical evolution but also a literal shrinking of the group from six members to a leaner, more focused four-piece. This shift is reflected in the album’s sound, which tones down the hard rock edge of their earlier work, ushering in a more accessible brand of melodic rock and pop.

“4” is a collection of arena-ready anthems, crafted with the help of legendary producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange. Tracks like “Urgent” and “Juke Box Hero” pulsate with infectious energy, driven by Mick Jones’ masterful guitar work and Lou Gramm’s soaring vocals. However, the album doesn’t shy away from softer moments. Power ballads like the ubiquitous “Waiting for a Girl Like You” showcase the band’s ability to deliver heartfelt emotion alongside catchy hooks. “4” isn’t a one-trick pony though. The surprisingly funky “Urgent,” complete with a scorching saxophone solo, throws a curveball, keeping the listener on their toes.

Foreigner’s “4” stands as a testament to the band’s ability to refine their sound and achieve mainstream success without sacrificing their musical identity. It’s a polished, radio-friendly collection of songs that remains a classic of the early 80s rock era.
