Heltah Skeltah – Nocturnal

Released in 1996, Nocturnal is the debut album from Brooklyn duo Heltah Skeltah, comprising Rock and Sean Price (then known as Ruck). Widely regarded as one of the standout releases from the Boot Camp Clik camp, the album pairs rugged street narratives with dark, bass-heavy production from Da Beatminerz and a cast of underground East Coast talent.

The record thrives on a murky, nocturnal atmosphere, with Rock’s booming delivery contrasting perfectly against Sean Price’s sharp, inventive lyricism. Tracks like “Letha Brainz Blo,” “Therapy,” and “Operation Lock Down” showcase the duo’s raw energy, while the classic “Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka” became one of the most recognizable songs associated with the wider Boot Camp movement.

What makes Nocturnal endure is its authenticity. The beats are grimy without feeling dated, the chemistry between the two MCs is effortless, and the album captures the gritty essence of mid-90s New York hip-hop at its peak. For fans of Smif-N-Wessun, Black Moon, and Mobb Deep, it remains an essential underground classic and a defining statement from one of Brooklyn’s most respected rap duos.
