Immortal’s At the Heart of Winter, released in 1999, is a monumental shift in the band’s evolution—bridging the raw fury of Norwegian black metal with the precision and grandeur of thrash. Recorded at Abyss Studios with Peter Tägtgren, the album marked the first without guitarist Demonaz due to tendinitis, though he remained as lyricist. Abbath took over guitar duties, crafting expansive, riff-driven compositions that traded blast beats for icy atmosphere and epic scale.
The six tracks—all clocking in over six minutes—unfold like frozen landscapes, with “Withstand the Fall of Time” and the title track delivering relentless momentum and melodic depth. The production is unusually crisp for black metal, allowing the intricate guitar work and Horgh’s thunderous drumming to shine through. The cover art by Jean-Pascal Fournier, depicting a frostbitten warrior in a desolate realm, perfectly mirrors the album’s cold majesty.
