Joni Mitchell – The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (Bottle-Green Clear Vinyl)

Joni Mitchell’s The Hissing of Summer Lawns is one of the most adventurous and sophisticated albums of her career, moving beyond the confessional folk style of her earlier work into a richer and more complex musical landscape. Drawing on jazz, pop, folk, and world music influences, Mitchell crafts a series of vivid character studies and observations about wealth, gender roles, consumer culture, and emotional isolation. The arrangements are subtle and atmospheric, filled with unusual textures, layered rhythms, and intricate harmonies that reward repeated listening. Rather than placing herself at the centre of every song, Mitchell often acts as a perceptive observer, examining the lives and aspirations of others with intelligence and empathy. Her songwriting remains poetic throughout, balancing social commentary with deeply human insights. Initially dividing some listeners expecting a more traditional singer-songwriter record, the album has since come to be recognised as one of her most innovative achievements, showcasing an artist expanding the possibilities of popular music without sacrificing emotional depth.
