Barney McAll is a jazz pianist and composer from Melbourne, Australia. His latest album, Transitive Cycles, was recorded live at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and features an ensemble of sensational musicians playing Rhodes, synth, horns, shakuhachi flute, bulbul tarang, double bass, Moog guitar, analogue electronics, percussion, and Melbourne’s extraordinary public sound sculpture: the Federation Bells. The work features interactive improvisation between the bells and the ensemble, with McAll masterfully leading the interplay on keyboards and his self-made instrument ‘Chucky’ (various music boxes, glockenspiel, kalimba, and electronics), creating an unforgettably ethereal soundscape on the banks of the Yarra River.
