Unlike many of their sprawling, slowly evolving works, Bleed is taut and restless. The album begins with Chris Abrahams’ piano figures, Tony Buck’s percussion, and Lloyd Swanton’s bass locking into a hypnotic pulse that gradually mutates over the course of the hour. The title is apt: the music feels like it is seeping outward, with motifs dissolving and re‑emerging, creating a sense of both continuity and unease.
The piece is structured around repetition and subtle variation. Abrahams’ piano lines often circle back on themselves, while Buck’s drumming shifts from delicate cymbal work to insistent rhythms, and Swanton’s bass provides a grounding drone. The trio’s interplay creates a tension between stasis and movement, as if the music is perpetually on the verge of breaking apart yet never does.
Critics praised Bleed for its intensity and focus. Where The Necks are often associated with expansive, meditative improvisations, here they compress their ideas into a tighter framework, producing a work that feels urgent and claustrophobic. The album has been described as one of their most “rock‑like” efforts, though it remains firmly rooted in their unique blend of jazz, minimalism, and experimental improvisation.
