Love is the self-titled debut album by the Los Angeles-based rock band Love, released in March 1966 by Elektra Records. It stands as a raw, energetic fusion of garage rock, folk rock, psychedelic rock, and R&B, capturing the spirit of mid-60s counterculture with a gritty, West Coast edge.

Led by the enigmatic Arthur Lee, the band crafted a sound that was both rebellious and melodic, drawing inspiration from the Byrds’ folk-rock stylings while injecting their own soulful urgency. The album opens with a radical reworking of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “My Little Red Book,” turning a pop standard into a snarling garage anthem. Other standout tracks include “Signed D.C.,” a haunting ballad allegedly referencing former drummer Don Conka’s struggles with addiction, and “A Message to Pretty,” a tender, melancholic love song.

Recorded primarily at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood over a few days in January 1966, the album features contributions from band members Johnny Echols (lead guitar), Bryan MacLean (rhythm guitar and vocals), Ken Forssi (bass), and Alban “Snoopy” Pfisterer (drums). MacLean’s “Softly to Me” adds a delicate counterpoint to Lee’s more aggressive compositions, hinting at the band’s future depth.

Though not as polished or ambitious as their later masterpiece Forever Changes, Love is a vital document of the band’s early sound—raw, immediate, and bursting with attitude. It sold approximately 150,000 copies, a modest success that laid the groundwork for their rapid evolution.
