Released in 1994, Massive Attack’s sophomore album, Protection, built upon the innovative soundscapes of their debut, Blue Lines. Protection dives into a genre-bending mix, seamlessly weaving together influences from R&B and hip-hop to reggae and electronica. The opening title track sets the tone, a melancholic masterpiece featuring the smooth vocals of Tracey Thorn, perfectly complemented by pulsating basslines and fragmented beats.
Tricky, a soon-to-be solo star, makes his mark on the album with his rapping on tracks like the iconic “Karmacoma” and the thought-provoking “Eurochild.” While the production remains as captivating as on Blue Lines, Protection offers a slightly different emotional experience. Some instrumental tracks, like “Weather Storm” and “Heat Miser,” lean towards a more atmospheric soundscape, occasionally bordering on Muzak. However, guest vocalists like Nicolette on “Sly” help to keep the listener engaged.
