Paul Simon’s eighth solo album, The Rhythm of the Saints, released in 1990, followed in the footsteps of his international success Graceland. This time, instead of South African rhythms, Simon delved into the rich musical traditions of Brazil. The album incorporates Brazilian percussion and instrumentation, blending them with Simon’s signature pop and rock sensibilities to create a worldbeat sound. Similar to Graceland, The Rhythm of the Saints achieved commercial success, reaching the top 5 on the US charts. While critically acclaimed, the album lacked the breakout single success of Graceland, though “The Obvious Child” did receive some radio play. The Rhythm of the Saints stands as a companion piece to Graceland, showcasing Simon’s talent for incorporating global influences into his songwriting.
