The Police’s third studio album, Zenyatta Mondatta, arrived in 1980, a culmination of the band’s prior explorations in new wave and post-punk. Released in October of that year, the record built on the success of their previous effort, Reggatta de Blanc, incorporating reggae influences alongside their signature sharp rock sound. While the meaning behind the album’s title remains intentionally ambiguous, hinting at everything from Zen philosophy to the world itself, Zenyatta Mondatta captured the band’s growing critical and commercial acclaim, reaching number one in the UK and breaking into the top five on the US charts. Featuring radio hits like “De Do Do Do, de Da Da Da” and the iconic “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” the album solidified The Police’s place as one of the leading bands of the new wave era.
