Arca, released on April 7, 2017, is the self-titled third studio album by Venezuelan producer and artist Alejandra Ghersi, known mononymously as Arca. It marks a profound shift in her artistic trajectory—not just sonically, but emotionally and personally. For the first time, Arca steps forward with her own voice, singing in Spanish, the language of her childhood and emotional memory. The result is a deeply intimate and vulnerable work that fuses experimental electronic textures with raw, human expression.

The album opens with “Piel,” a sparse and aching track that sets the tone for what follows: a collection of songs that feel like confessions whispered through static. Tracks like “Anoche,” “Reverie,” and “Desafío” blend glitchy production with operatic drama, creating a soundscape that is both fractured and lush. Arca’s vocals—often improvised, unfiltered, and emotionally charged—float through the mix like ghosts, sometimes tender, sometimes tortured.

Inspired in part by her close friendship with Björk, who encouraged her to sing, Arca embraces imperfection and spontaneity. The lyrics are largely improvised, capturing fleeting emotional truths rather than polished narratives. The album’s artwork, created by longtime collaborator Doon Kanda, mirrors its sonic themes: surreal, sensual, and unsettling.
