Burzum – Hvis lyset tar oss

Burzum’s Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, released in 1994, is a defining work of atmospheric black metal—bleak, hypnotic, and steeped in philosophical provocation. Recorded in 1992 but delayed due to legal and personal turmoil surrounding Varg Vikernes, the album unfolds as a concept piece that is musically stark and immersive.

The first three tracks—“Det Som En Gang Var,” “Hvis Lyset Tar Oss,” and “Inn I Slottet Fra Droemmen”—are sprawling, mid-tempo compositions built on repetitive riffs, minimalist drumming, and distant, tortured vocals. Offering a meditative counterpoint to the earlier chaos, the final track, “Tomhet,” is a 14-minute ambient piece that drifts into eerie stillness.  Theodor Kittelsen’s haunting illustration Fattigmannen, featured on the cover, reinforces the album’s folkloric and nihilistic tone.
