Car Seat Headrest – The Scholars

Car Seat Headrest – The Scholars is a sprawling, conceptual rock opera released in May 2025. The album takes place at Parnassus University, a fictional campus where students wrestle with themes of tradition, rebellion, faith, and logic.

Musically, The Scholars marks a return to guitar-driven arrangements, moving away from the electronic experimentation of Making a Door Less Open (2020). The band—now firmly a four-piece—crafted the album through long jam sessions and analog recording techniques, resulting in a grand, theatrical sound.

The record is divided into three parts: The Companions, The Ransom, and The Reward. Standout tracks include CCF (I’m Gonna Stay With You), a layered, swelling opener; Gethsemane, an 11-minute epic; and Planet Desperation, a nearly 19-minute odyssey that serves as the album’s thesis statement.
