Focus – Focus 3 VG/VG+

Focus’ Focus 3 is a sprawling and ambitious progressive rock album that showcases the Dutch band’s remarkable blend of technical skill, creativity, and musical eclecticism. Expanding on the approach that made them one of the leading European progressive rock acts of the 1970s, the album moves effortlessly between rock, jazz fusion, classical influences, and moments of playful experimentation. The performances are exceptional throughout, driven by Jan Akkerman’s fluid and expressive guitar work and Thijs van Leer’s distinctive keyboards, flute, and vocals.

What makes Focus 3 particularly rewarding is its sense of adventure. The album’s extended compositions give the musicians plenty of room to explore different moods and ideas, shifting from intricate instrumental passages to melodic, accessible moments without losing cohesion. Despite its considerable scope, the music remains engaging thanks to the band’s strong sense of dynamics and interplay. Rich in invention, virtuosity, and personality, Focus 3 stands as one of the defining releases of continental European progressive rock and a high point in Focus’ celebrated catalogue.
