Wishbone Ash ‎– Pilgrimage VG+/VG+

Wishbone Ash’s Pilgrimage is a confident and expansive step forward from the band’s debut, refining the melodic twin-guitar approach that would become their signature while broadening their musical horizons. Blending blues, hard rock, progressive elements, and jazz-inflected improvisation, the album showcases a group developing its own distinctive identity within the early 1970s rock landscape. The interplay between Andy Powell and Ted Turner is particularly striking, their intertwined guitar lines creating a rich, fluid sound that feels both powerful and elegant.

The album balances tightly constructed songs with more exploratory passages, allowing the band to stretch out without losing focus. There is a strong sense of atmosphere throughout, with reflective moments sitting comfortably alongside driving rock arrangements and extended instrumental sections. Rather than relying on sheer heaviness, Wishbone Ash emphasise melody, dynamics, and musicianship, giving the music a timeless quality. Thoughtful, adventurous, and beautifully played, Pilgrimage stands as an important early achievement that laid the groundwork for the band’s later classics and helped establish their enduring reputation.
