Fripp & Eno ‎– Evening Star

$51.95 Inc. GST

Evening Star, released in December 1975, is the second collaboration between Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, and a landmark in the evolution of ambient music. Where their debut (No Pussyfooting) was stark and confrontational in its use of tape loops and guitar feedback, Evening Star is more meditative, more structured—an album that invites contemplation rather than demands attention.

The first side unfolds like a suite of sonic miniatures. “Wind on Water” opens with shimmering Frippertronics—Fripp’s sustained guitar tones looped and layered into a gentle tide—while Eno’s synthesizers and treatments lend a celestial glow. The title track “Evening Star” is the emotional centerpiece: warm, melodic, and almost pastoral, it’s a rare moment of ambient music that feels genuinely uplifting. “Evensong” and “Wind on Wind” continue the drift, the latter being a fragment from Eno’s Discreet Music, repurposed here as a kind of ambient coda.

Then comes Side Two: “An Index of Metals,” a nearly 28-minute descent into abstraction. It begins with delicate textures but gradually accumulates distortion and density, like metal oxidizing in real time. The piece is static yet evolving, immersive yet unsettling—a study in sonic entropy. It’s ambient music not as background, but as psychological terrain.

The album’s cover, a painting by Peter Schmidt, mirrors the music’s duality: soft gradients and geometric precision, serenity and structure. And in many ways, Evening Star marks a fork in the road—Fripp would soon retreat from music to study at John G. Bennett’s esoteric academy, while Eno would push further into ambient theory and production.
