Hamid El Shaeri – The Slam! Years (1983-1988)

Hamid El Shaeri’s The Slam! Years (1983–1988) is a vibrant compilation that captures the formative period of one of the Arab world’s most influential pop innovators.

Released by Habibi Funk in 2022, the album gathers material El Shaeri recorded for Egypt’s Slam! label during the mid-1980s, a time when he was reshaping the sound of Arabic popular music. Born in Libya and later based in Cairo, El Shaeri became a central figure in the rise of Al Jeel, a modernized style of Egyptian pop that fused traditional melodies with Western production techniques. This collection highlights his early experiments, where drum machines, synthesizers, and funk-inspired grooves met Arabic lyricism and vocal delivery, producing a fresh, cosmopolitan sound that resonated across the region.

The compilation is not simply a nostalgic look back but a document of cultural transformation. In these recordings, one hears the optimism and energy of a generation embracing new technologies and global influences while remaining rooted in local identity. El Shaeri’s music from this era is marked by its sleek production, catchy hooks, and a sense of forward momentum that distinguished him from his contemporaries. His track “Ayonha,” for instance, became emblematic of Habibi Funk’s mission to reintroduce overlooked gems from the Arab world to international audiences, and its inclusion here underscores the enduring appeal of his work.

What makes The Slam! Years compelling is the way it bridges worlds: it is both unmistakably Egyptian and unmistakably global, reflecting the cross-cultural exchanges of the 1980s. The album offers a snapshot of El Shaeri before he achieved full superstar status, when he was still experimenting and defining his voice. Listening today, the music feels timeless, its blend of synth-pop, soul, and Arabic pop as engaging now as it was groundbreaking then.
