Joni Mitchell ‎– For The Roses (Rose Opaque Vinyl, RSD 2026)

For the Roses sits at a pivotal moment in Joni Mitchell’s evolution, bridging the intimate folk of her early work with the more harmonically adventurous writing that would define her mid‑70s. The album feels spacious and quietly intricate: open‑tuned guitars ring with clarity, woodwinds and piano slip in as gentle counter‑voices, and Mitchell’s melodies stretch into unexpected contours without losing their conversational ease. Lyrically, it’s sharp and reflective, balancing personal vulnerability with pointed observations about fame, relationships, and artistic autonomy. The production is clean but never sterile, giving each arrangement room to breathe while highlighting the subtle shifts in tone and texture. What emerges is a record of transition and deepening confidence—still rooted in folk, but already leaning toward the jazz‑inflected sophistication of her later work, delivered with a calm, luminous precision that makes its introspection feel both intimate and expansive.
