Joy Division – Closer VG/VG

Closer is Joy Division at their most severe and spectral, an album that feels like it’s suspended between collapse and transcendence. The production is stark but spacious, giving each instrument room to carve out its own emotional contour: Peter Hook’s bass lines move with mournful clarity, Stephen Morris’s drums pulse with mechanical inevitability, and Bernard Sumner’s guitar and synth textures drift like cold vapour around Ian Curtis’s voice. Curtis sounds distant yet devastatingly exposed, delivering lyrics that read like fragments of despair, resignation and unreachable longing. The first half carries a tense, brittle energy, while the second sinks into a slow, funereal beauty, culminating in pieces that feel almost post‑human in their detachment. As a whole, the album is both a document of a band pushing their aesthetic to its furthest edge and an unintentional epitaph, its emotional weight deepened by the tragedy that followed.
