King Diamond – Abigail

King Diamond’s Abigail, released in 1987, is a towering pillar of horror-themed heavy metal and one of the genre’s most celebrated concept albums. It tells a chilling gothic tale set in 1845, where newlyweds Jonathan La’Fey and Miriam Natias inherit a haunted mansion and are warned by seven mysterious horsemen not to move in. Ignoring the omen, they become entangled in a supernatural drama involving possession, betrayal, and the rebirth of a malevolent spirit named Abigail.

Musically, the album is a masterclass in theatrical metal. King Diamond’s piercing falsetto and sinister growls guide the narrative, while Andy LaRocque and Michael Denner’s dual guitars weave intricate harmonies and eerie riffs. Mikkey Dee’s drumming adds relentless drive, and the production—handled by King himself—balances clarity with a haunting atmosphere. Each track unfolds like a scene in a horror opera, from the ominous “Arrival” to the climactic “Black Horsemen.”

Abigail isn’t just a metal album—it’s a full-blown ghost story, complete with crypts, cursed bloodlines, and spectral warnings.
