Virgin is Lorde’s fourth studio album, released on June 27, 2025, and it marks a bold, introspective evolution in her artistry. After the sun-drenched serenity of Solar Power, Lorde returns to a more visceral, synth-driven sound—one that’s emotionally raw, thematically daring, and sonically unpredictable. The album explores identity, femininity, and transformation, shaped by her experiences with heartbreak, psychedelic therapy, and a renewed connection to her body and self-expression.
The title Virgin isn’t about sexual purity—it’s about essence, clarity, and rebirth. Lorde described the album’s “colour” as clear, like bathwater, ice, and windows, reflecting her desire for full transparency. The cover art, an X-ray of a pelvis with an IUD, belt buckle, and zipper, underscores this theme of revealing the inner self. Tracks like “Hammer” and “Man of the Year” dive into gender fluidity and bodily autonomy, while “What Was That” channels emotional disorientation through shimmering synths and fragmented memories.
Musically, the album blends dance-pop, indietronica, and alt-pop with minimalist arrangements and instinctive structures. It’s a departure from traditional pop formats, favoring emotional immediacy over polish. Lorde co-produced the record with Jim-E Stack, bringing in collaborators like Dan Nigro, Dev Hynes, and Buddy Ross to help shape its textured, collage-like sound.
