Released in 1984, “Fugazi” marked the second studio album by British neo-prog outfit Marillion. It was their first collaboration with drummer Ian Mosley, who brought a more hard-driving sound compared to his predecessor. This shift took Marillion’s progressive rock foundation and infused it with a heavier, more direct energy.
The album streamlined the band’s earlier complexities, leaning towards a more focused and powerful rock identity. Tracks like “Assassing” and the title track “Fugazi” showcase this evolution, with intricate arrangements interwoven with Fish’s soaring vocals and Steve Rothery’s distinctive guitar work.
While the progressive elements remained, “Fugazi” presented a tighter and more accessible version of Marillion. It explored a range of themes, with Fish’s lyrics tackling social issues and personal struggles alongside fantastical imagery. This blend of the introspective and the imaginative became a hallmark of the band’s sound.
