Overkill – Horrorscope (Blue Marble Vinyl)

Horrorscope, released in 1991, is the fifth thrash metal offering from New York’s Overkill. It marked a turning point for the band, featuring a new dual-guitarist attack by Merritt Gant and Rob Cannavino. While some fans worried about the departure of longtime guitarist Bobby Gustafson, Horrorscope quickly silenced those concerns.

This album stands out as arguably Overkill’s strongest effort. Horrorscope isn’t just fast thrashing chaos, though it delivers plenty of that. The new lineup injects a melancholic and even cynical edge into the music, creating a diverse and dynamic soundscape. Tracks like “Coma” and “Blood Money” exemplify the band’s heavier direction, while the title track “Horrorscope” grinds with a slow, menacing melody. Diehard thrash fans will be pleased, but Horrorscope also offers something for those who appreciate a bit more depth alongside the aggressive energy.
