Pink Floyd – A Momentary Lapse of Reason

$62.95 Inc. GST

A Momentary Lapse of Reason, released in September 1987, is Pink Floyd’s first studio album following the departure of founding member Roger Waters. It marks a pivotal moment in the band’s history—both a reclamation and reinvention—led by David Gilmour, who steered the project from its origins as a solo endeavor into a full-fledged Floyd release. The album was recorded primarily aboard Gilmour’s houseboat studio, the Astoria, and features contributions from drummer Nick Mason and the return of keyboardist Richard Wright, albeit in a limited, session capacity.

Sonically, the album leans into a polished, digital aesthetic, embracing MIDI technology, sequencers, and drum machines—an evolution from the analog experimentation of earlier Floyd records. Tracks like “Learning to Fly” and “On the Turning Away” blend atmospheric textures with radio-friendly structures, while deeper cuts such as “Sorrow” and “Yet Another Movie” evoke the band’s darker, more introspective tendencies. Thematically, the album explores dislocation, political apathy, and personal reckoning, though it eschews the conceptual unity of works like The Wall or Wish You Were Here.

Critics were divided—some saw it as a diluted echo of the band’s former brilliance, others as a necessary rebirth. But commercially, it was a triumph, outselling The Final Cut and launching a massive world tour that reasserted Pink Floyd’s place in the rock pantheon.
