Roy Ayers Ubiquity – He’s Coming

He’s Coming marks Roy Ayers Ubiquity’s shift into a deeper, more spiritually charged groove, blending jazz‑funk warmth with a sense of searching intensity. The album moves with Ayers’ trademark fluidity—vibraphone lines that shimmer and glide, bass and drums locked into supple, rolling patterns, and keyboards that add both colour and cosmic atmosphere. Vocally, Ayers leans into a mix of soulful uplift and reflective urgency, giving the record a thematic cohesion that feels both personal and socially attuned. The arrangements favour spaciousness: long, hypnotic grooves that build gradually, allowing each instrumental voice to settle into the texture without crowding the mix. What defines the album is its balance of serenity and drive—music that feels smooth on the surface yet carries an undercurrent of determination, a fusion of jazz, funk, and spiritual contemplation that stands as one of Ayers’ most resonant early‑70s statements.
